The island has ongoing Aboriginal cultural links, it was utilised by Aboriginals for hunting trips and relaxation for thousands of years. Captain Cook visited Fitzroy Island. Much later the island was used for a long period as a Chinese quarantine station for chinese workers who were going to the mainland gold fields to work back in the gold rush days. Fitzroy Island has been used as a mission school and later, during World War Two as a Coast Watch Station.
