97 per cent of Fitzroy Island is a National Park, covered in tropical rainforest and with good walking trails. You can hike up to the lookout for stunning views of the Coral Sea and Fitzroy Island itself. There are two main beaches you also have access to. The Pacific Islands Store and Foxy's bar and cafe are open to all visitors. The beaches are to die for.
Fringing Coral Reefs
Fitzroy Island has tropical fringing reefs that have both soft and hard corals as well as a massive amount of marine life, friendly fish, sea turtles, stingrays just strap on your mask and snorkel and you can snorkel right off the beaches. Try throwing some bread in the water at the end of the jetty and see how many fish come streaking up to grab a meal.
History of Fitzroy Island
Fitzroy Island has a very interesting history. Starting wtih it's separation from the mainland some 8,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. The island has continuing Aboriginal cultural links, it was used by Aboriginals mainly for hunting trips and recreation. Much later Captain Cook also visited Fitzroy Island. Much later the island was used for a long time as a Chinese quarantine station for chinese people who were heading to the mainland gold fields to work. Fitzroy Island has been used as a mission school and later, during World War Two as a Coast Watch Station. The island was also important as a significant Lighthouse base, with the last permanent lighthouse structure on the main island now a tourist attraction. Fitzroy Island now has an automatic lighthouse on adjacent Little Fitzroy Island.
