Mission Beach is 1.5 - 2 hours south of Cairns (depending on your transport). It is a very layed back tropical place and home to the Cassowary. Long beaches and the step off point for Dunk Island many people don't even know it is there.
A welcome break from the long haul to Cairns it is the ideal way to break up the journey. If you are going White Water Rafting it is better to go from here than to backtrack from Cairns.
Lush tropical rainforest surrounds most of the accommodation in this area with some hostels actually set into the rainforest. Around Tully and Mission Beach the rainforest is some of the best North Queensland has to offer.

Try to make some time to stop over at Mission Beach, it's on the way to Cairns anyway and it is a beautiful place with much to offer.
