Manhood Initiation Protects Aboriginal Men From Croc Attack ?
Imagine a time before guns and before Europeans came to Australia, ten, twenty even forty thousand years ago. We know for sure that the Australian Aboriginal people were living here. Crocodiles had not been hunted to near extinction. This would mean that the top half of Australia would have had very large crocodiles in residence in almost every creek, river and coastal area and lots of them.
Here is a story related by an Aboriginal Elder of the Katherine region. As a young man his people initiated him into manhood. This involved his circumcision by a rock knife and tribal markings cut into his body which have significant meaning. He was taught a song that will stop lightning from striking that he must remember. The other young initiates are taught a special song each. A song to bring on rain and flood and a song to make floodwaters recede quickly. Each boy has one song for a special purpose.
His body was then painted with Red Ochre and after a time he had to go to the crocodile infested river, dive in and wash the Ochre off. He believed the Ochre gathered in a special hole in the river and when it flooded the colour and a Rainbow Spirit would wash out all over the land.
This would protect him from Crocodile attack for the rest of his life even if he swam a river with many Crocodiles around him. Who are we to say this is not true? He is after all, an Elder of his people and has no doubt tested this protection many times during his life, he is still here and still has all his limbs as an old man.
It is known that the Australian Aboriginal has a special relationship with the land and the animals in Australia. The creator of Oz Magic even with his limited experience knows that if you study any Aboriginal story there is a truth, a meaning and a lesson in the story.
Here is something else for you to consider in regards to the Crocodile Protection bestowed upon young Aboriginal men. If this ritual does not work, why has it survived over tens of thousands of years to still be practiced in initiation rights today?
